METHADONES
- THIS WON'T HURT... CD
Chicago's
Methadones got our attention with their last proper album, "Not
Economically Viable", which came out on Thick Records in
2004. It was their breakthrough, and anyone who overlooked that
LP missed out on the BEST pop punk record of 2004. Now it's back
to business, and the Methadones have a new batch of originals
that pick up where they left off with the great "Not Economically
Viable".

MONIKERS

The
first EP from these Floridian gritty pop-punkers. Often thought
of Southern Jawbreaker or Crimpshine for all the right reasons.
Ryan used to be in Discount and Monikers was started in a vain
to attempt to recapture his lost youh, but now he mostly just
makes snide comments to everyone he meets for no good reason.

PEABODYS
- ALL OUT OF YOU CD
Recorded
& self-released in 2001, The Peabodys first full-length changed
label hands several times before its eventual release on New York
City's Bling Bling Records in mid 2003. The Bling Bling version
added deluxe packaging, liner notes by Eric Peabody and scads
of bonus songs to the original self-released version. They even
threw a new mastering job by Mutant Pop Records honcho, Tim Chandler,
on top to sweeten the deal. "All Out Of You" is a more
subdued and New Wave-ish recording than any of The Peabodys past
or subsequent releases. It's definitely for the fans that emphasize
the "pop" in their pop punk. Think Green day's "Warning"
or "Alcatraz" by the Mr. T Experience and you're in
the right ballpark.

POPSTERS
- ALL OF YOU CD
Released in mid 2006 by Portland, OR's Incessant Drip Records,
this is by far the greatest release by Palermo, Italy's The Popsters.
Past releases on Stardumb and Knock Knock Records were solid punk
albums to be sure, but "All Of You" takes the band to
all new heights of catchy and intricate guitar-driven rock. Mixed
& mastered at Sonic Iguana Studios by the legendary Mass Giorgini,
this album of Descendents-esque punk rock riffage will blow you
away. Think Doughboys meets Screeching Weasel meets Superchunk
meets Weston, and you'll have an inkling to the total awesomeness
of this cd. If a combination like that spells anything other than
punk rock perfection to you, then you're probably a bit on the
slow side and should maybe check out something by... oh I dunno...
Fall Out Boy... In any event, this is terrific poppy punk sung
in English with adorable Italian accents and phrasing. You should
buy it pronto!

PRETTYBOY
THORSON & THE FALLING ANGELS - TAKE IT EASY
What
a difference recording can make. I reviewed their 7” in
the
last issue and thought it was decent, but felt that there was
something missing. I can’t say the same for this full-length.
There’s so much more energy and so much more passion. Maybe
it was
lost in the fuzz on the 7”, but the three songs that are
on both
releases (especially “Things I Should Have Told You Before”
and
“Two Step Across Two Harbors”) sound almost like a
new song was
created between the two recordings. They remind of me a bit of
Shakey Bones, where there is a strong tie to roots music, but
there’s way too much punch and energy to call it folk.
(Plus it wouldn’t do either band justice to make pigeonhole
them
like that.) At times, reminiscent of Cranford Nix’s gloomy
outlook
and voice. At other times, they sound like they’d be right
at home
on a show with any of the Tampa/ A.D.D. bands. This, on repeat,
has
been my commute soundtrack for two weeks straight. I just can’t
take
it out of my CD player. Fantastic. -Megan (Razorcake Zine)
